La raza de perros Montañero de los Alpes, es originaria de Alemania. Aparecen en el siglo XVIII, de la mano de cazadores alemanes, que necesitaban perros de rastro que se adaptaran sin problema a los terrenos más difíciles y escarpados.
Son perros robustos y resistentes. Soportan bien el cansancio y las inclemencias del tiempo. Durante su trabajo se muestran tranquilos y tenaces, esto sumado a su excelente olfato, los convierte en los perros de rastro perfecto.
Obtienen estupendos resultados en su trabajo, descubriendo a las presas heridas y siguiendo huellas de sangre.
El reconocimiento oficial por parte de la Federación Cinológica Internacional, se produjo mucho después, en una época más reciente.
En la actualidad, esta raza es utilizada en Alemania por unos pocos apasionados y, prácticamente desconocida fuera del país.
Es una raza fuerte, con muy buenas proporciones: poseen un tronco largo y bien proporcionado con la cabeza. Su hocico es fuerte, las orejas son colgantes y anchas.
Sus extremidades son cortas y rectas, pero robustas. Tienen el pelo corto, muy tupido, de color negro con manchas de fuego marrones.
